Unearth the Hidden Tastes of Korea: Epicurean Adventures in Pyeongchang and Tongyeong

Stepping onto the flavorful streets of Korea, prepare to be seduced by the killer combination of traditional and modern tastes. Today, we’re going on an epicurean adventure from the mountains of Pyeongchang to the coastal town of Tongyeong.

Yuchun Noodle House (유천막국수)

If you are ever in Gangwon-do, you cannot miss Yuchun Noodle House and their signature makguksu (buckwheat noodles). The secret to their extraordinary taste is the traditional soy sauce and the harmony of the beef bone and radish water kimchi broth. Choose from water buckwheat noodles, spicy buckwheat noodles, buckwheat pancakes, pork and pheasant dumpling soup. The noodles are rich with the fragrant taste of buckwheat but are mild and not overpowering. Paired with their seasoning that packs a punch, the taste of the buckwheat really shines through.

ShakingRock (흔들바위)

ShakingRock or ‘Heundeulbawi’ in Korean offers a heavenly retreat for lovers of aromatic herbs. The menu is as fickle as the weather – always changing and surprising. Their specialty is a feast of assorted mountain greens accompanied by diverse dishes. The radiant salad with refreshing dressing is a real pilferer of rice. Not to mention, the crispy potato pancake, delicate dohtuhgui (grilled deodeok), soft tofu pancake and the pièce de résistance; the tantalizing Kamja Tteok! Catering to all taste buds, from the young to the old, ShakingRock is the go-to for a refreshing and meticulous meal.

DongYang Restaurant (동양식당)

Based in the lush valleys of Daegwallyeong, the DongYang Restaurant is a diva. It’s so good that it was featured on popular show ‘Heo Yeong-man’s Baekban Expedition’. Their menu stars are osambulgogi (octopus and pork belly) and squid bulgogi. The veggies are simply prepared yet, pack a punch. The hearty osambulgogi starts as a hot pot then reduces to a meaty stew, celebrating the natural taste and the juicy combination of pork belly and seafood juices. The Deodeok Gui (grilled deodeok), Korean style sashimi and puffer fish stew leave an impressive aftertaste. To sum the experience, enjoy the unforgettable stir-fry rice.
